Chapter

Twelve

One thing that was really bothering me about all this was the potential for my being manipulated by Loki. No, scratch that—the absolute certainty. I needed to figure this out, and the best way to do it was to tap that power I hated to use again.

Was it useful? Yep. But it was a fae thing, and all such magics came at a cost. Yet, I was dealing with the gods, and I needed every advantage I could get. Maybe I’d have to pay a terrible price later for using the power—so what? I’d deal with that eventuality when it happened. Right now, I needed to outthink one of the greatest trickster gods of all time.

And oh, do I ever need to outsmart this fucker.

I might have become hot shit recently and tangled with some nasty players, but Loki was the OG of fucking people over. Thinking back to the way he manipulated me into making it easy for him to remove Odin’s curse, one thing was abundantly clear. That was, if I didn’t take control of the situation, I’d be nothing more than Loki’s pawn.

If I allowed it, chances were good I’d end up on the losing end of the gods’ games once more. All of this, the entire situation, was the result of nothing more than another pissing contest between the gods. We were all pawns to them, tools and toys to be used and discarded. I needed to stop playing checkers and learn to play chess, and I resolved to start by controlling the outcome of this job in my favor.

With a deep sigh, I began to nibble on my thumbnail as I paced the room, alternating sips of coffee as I chewed the nail to the quick. Soon, I felt it come over me, a sort of warm, tingling feeling that told me Fionn’s stolen gift was doing its thing. Then came that old telltale clarity of thought that had gotten me through more than a few exams and term papers in high school.

Alright, Colin, time to think this through.

First, I needed to assess the situation. Who benefitted from us pulling off this job? I could only assume that Loki stood to gain something, but what?

The Apple of Discord—has to be. Or Cronos’ timepiece. Or both.

Of course he’d want the Apple. It was Eris’ ace in the hole, the source of a lot of her power, and it had been used to bring down nations. The thought of what a god like Loki might do with something like that was enough to give me nightmares.

If I knew Loki, he’d likely use it to get revenge on the Norse pantheon—and then I’d get blamed for it. Hell, that was probably his plan all along. He probably saw it as one big joke, figuring I’d come out on top even if Odin himself came after me.

Or maybe he didn’t think that at all. I have to remember the gods don’t think like we do.

Speaking of gods, I hadn’t seen hide nor hair of Click since the two first tasked me with this job.
